About the journal

The Journal of Sustainable Engineering and Infrastructure (JSEI) publishes research that helps engineers design, build and operate infrastructure that lasts longer, uses fewer resources and withstands a changing climate. Its coverage spans low-carbon and recycled construction materials, structural and geotechnical resilience, urban water and drainage systems, transport networks, and life-cycle assessment. The journal is written for civil and environmental engineers in research and practice, as well as planners, asset managers and public agencies that commission and maintain infrastructure.

Manuscripts are evaluated through double-blind peer review, with reviewers asked to check that experimental methods, system boundaries and modeling assumptions are reported in enough detail to be reproduced. The editors welcome laboratory, field and modeling studies, and give priority to work that links technical performance with environmental and economic outcomes. All articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license and appear online as soon as they are ready, before being assigned to a quarterly issue.

Aims and scope

JSEI aims to accelerate the shift toward infrastructure that is low in carbon, efficient in its use of materials and resilient to climate hazards. The journal publishes evidence that practitioners can use: tested material formulations, validated design and assessment methods, field performance data and transparent life-cycle comparisons. It is especially interested in solutions suited to rapidly urbanizing regions and resource-constrained settings, and in studies that consider whole-life performance rather than construction alone. By bringing materials science, structural engineering, hydrology and transport research together, it supports integrated approaches to infrastructure planning.

Topics within scope

  • Low-carbon cements and supplementary cementitious materials
  • Recycled aggregates and construction waste valorization
  • Life-cycle assessment of buildings and infrastructure
  • Infrastructure resilience to climate and seismic hazards
  • Urban stormwater and nature-based solutions
  • Water supply and wastewater infrastructure
  • Sustainable transport and pavement engineering
  • Structural health monitoring and asset management
  • Circular economy in the built environment

Mechanical Performance and Life-Cycle Assessment of Recycled Aggregate Concrete for Low-Rise Social Housing in Central Chile

Camila Fuentealba, Ignacio Araya Soto, Valentina Riquelme et al.

Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) from demolition waste could reduce landfilling and natural aggregate extraction in Chile, but its structural adequacy and environmental benefits for housing construction remain uncertain. This study evaluated the mechanical performance and life-cycle environmental…

Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Stormwater Management in Tropical Cities: Performance, Design Adaptations and Barriers to Implementation

Aisyah Rahmawati, Wei Jie Tan, Juliana Cardoso Pereira et al.

Rapid urbanization and intensifying rainfall are overwhelming drainage systems in tropical cities, where conventional gray infrastructure is costly to expand and often poorly maintained. Nature-based solutions such as bioretention systems, green roofs, constructed wetlands, permeable pavements and…

Prof. Sofia Lindberg

PhD

Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Chalmers University of TechnologyGothenburg, Sweden

Sofia Lindberg is Professor of Building Materials at Chalmers University of Technology. Her research combines laboratory testing and life-cycle assessment to develop concrete and mortar mixes with lower embodied carbon and longer service lives, with a focus on recycled aggregates and supplementary cementitious materials. She has led national and European projects on circular construction and serves on standardization committees for concrete durability testing. Before becoming Editor-in-Chief of JSEI in 2024, she was an associate editor of an international construction materials journal.
